Phương pháp AREA và ứng dụng vào IELTS Speaking Part 3

Bài thi IELTS Speaking được chia làm ba phần:

• Part 1: giới thiệu và trả lời các chủ đề xoay quanh trải nghiệm cá nhân của các bạn.
• Part 1: nói về một chủ đề nhất định.
• Part 1: thảo luận sâu hơn về chủ đề đã được hỏi ở phần hai.

Ở phần ba, trong vòng từ 4 tới 5 phút, các bạn phải đưa ra được các câu trả lời một cách logic và chi tiết hơn. Để làm tốt phần thi này các bạn cần có sự sáng tạo, lập luận chặt chẽ và cần chứng minh cho giám khảo thấy được khả năng sử dụng tiếng Anh thành thạo của mình. Phương pháp AREA là một trong số những phương pháp trả lời mà các bạn có thể tham khảo và sử dụng trong phần thi IELTS Speaking Part 3.

Phương pháp AREA là gì? 

Phương pháp AREA không phải là một công thức về từ vựng hay ngữ pháp, nó là phương pháp trả lời IELTS Speaking nhằm xây dựng và hệ thống ý tưởng, áp dụng trong toàn bộ phần thi IELTS Speaking part 3.

Phương pháp AREA này có kết cấu như sau: 

• Answer (trả lời): Đưa ra câu trả lời trực tiếp và súc tích cho câu hỏi, không cần thiết phải paraphrase lại câu hỏi. 
• Reason (lý do): Đưa ra lý do cho câu trả lời, trình bày rõ ràng các luận điểm. Lí do đưa ra nên liên quan trực tiếp tới câu trả lời được đưa ra trước đó, tránh diễn đạt ẩn dụ và dài dòng không cần thiết.
• Example (ví dụ): Đưa ra ví dụ để chứng minh, minh hoạ cho câu trả lời. 
• Alternatives (thay thế): Lật ngược lại vấn đề được hỏi, đưa ra ý kiến tranh luận phản bác cho câu hỏi.
  Đây là bước không bắt buộc khi theo Phương pháp AREA, các bạn có thể linh hoạt sử dụng bước này tùy thuộc vào dạng câu hỏi và chủ đề được hỏi. 

Để minh họa rõ hơn cho các bước trong Phương pháp AREA, hãy nhìn vào các câu hỏi bên dưới thuộc chủ đề Animals and Pets và tìm hiểu cách triển khai câu trả lời cho các câu hỏi đó sử dụng Phương pháp AREA:

Question 1: Do you think animals have feelings and rights? 

• Answer – Yes, I do believe that animals have their own emotions and freedom. 

• Reason – đưa ra lí do tại sao lại đưa ra câu trả lời phía trên bằng cách tự đặt câu hỏi why – This is because they have their own ways of expressing happiness that can be pointed out and share many similar characteristics with human beings.
• Example – đưa ra một hoặc nhiều ví dụ để chứng minh – For example, pets like dogs usually run to their owners whenever they arrive home and wave their tails as a sign of happiness. Furthermore, dogs are known to be loyal and can be trained to assist people in both daily and special tasks, which are also why they need to have rights in order to be well-protected.

Question 2: Is it morally right to spend a lot of money on pets, rather than helping people in need?

• Answer – This is a very interesting question to me. In my opinion, I believe it is entirely moral to use money for pets.
• Reason – triển khai lập luận bổ trợ cho câu trả lời trên, đặt câu hỏi “why” – As a matter of fact, to many people, pets are just like members in their family so taking care of pets is no doubt their duty.
• Example – đưa ra ví dụ của việc “taking care of pet ” chính là – For example, pet owners are willing to pay an excessive amount of money for their pets’ food, toys, cleansing products or even clothing. 
• Alternatives – lật lại vấn đề được hỏi – Whether people donate money for those “people in need” or not, it is totally their personal matters.

Question 3: If a shark kills a human in the sea, should it be hunted down?

• Answer – This is a very intriguing question. I would say hunting it down is neither necessary nor feasible. 
• Reason – Đưa ra lập luận rõ nhất của việc tại sao ta nói chúng không nên bị “hunted down”, trả lời cho câu hỏi “why” – As a matter of fact, the odds of being attacked, or killed by a shark is fairly slim, and killing it will do no good but affect the ecology of the ocean. 
• Alternatives – đưa ra một phương án hay sự lựa chọn khác khả thi hoặc đúng đắn hơn – From my perspective, , there are many other measures that can be taken into consideration like shark nets or drumlines to reduce shark attacks. 
  Ở trường hợp này, vì câu hỏi đã đặt ra một trường hợp giả định cụ thể nên các bạn có thể bỏ qua phần Reason và tiếp tục với phần đưa ra phản bác cho câu hỏi như trên.

Tại sao nên sử dụng Phương pháp AREA? 

Phần thi IELTS Speaking được đánh giá dựa trên 4 tiêu chí:

• Fluency and Coherence
• Lexical Resource & Grammatical Range
• Accuracy 
• Pronunciation 

Một câu trả lời được hệ thống logic và theo một cấu trúc chặt chẽ sẽ là nền tảng vững chắc để các bạn đạt dễ dàng trình bày ý kiến cá nhân cũng như tối đa hóa khả năng trình bày của mình để đáp ứng các tiêu chí trong phần thi IELTS Speaking. 

Một số ưu điểm có thể thấy được của phương pháp AREA như phương pháp này có thể được áp dụng với hầu hết tất cả các dạng câu hỏi từ Part 1 cho đến Part 3, hay các dạng chủ đề từ quen thuộc cho tới ít gặp trong bài thi IELTS Speaking. Bên cạnh đó, phương pháp AREA đơn giản để hiểu và áp dụng trong việc rút ngắn thời gian suy nghĩ của các bạn mà vẫn đưa ra được câu trả lời có lập luận và ví dụ rõ ràng.

Tuy nhiên, các bạn sẽ cần nhiều thời gian để luyện tập sử dụng phương pháp AREA để trả lời IELTS Speaking một cách thành thạo vì phương pháp này đòi hỏi các bạn phải có nền tảng tư duy phản biện cũng như vốn kiến thức xã hội rộng, vì việc lập tức đưa ra lí lẽ cũng như ví dụ mang tính xã hội trong vài giây suy nghĩ là không đơn giản. 

Các bạn ở trình độ 4.0 – 5.0 thường chỉ dừng ở bước A và R. Phương pháp AREA sẽ phù hợp với đối tượng các bạn đang mong muốn có được band điểm 6.0+ vì việc đưa ra câu trả lời đầy đủ các bước thể hiện việc các bạn biết phát triển luận điểm có chiều sâu, có liên hệ chặt chẽ với nhau và liên hệ được với các ví dụ thực tiễn xã hội. 

Áp dụng phương pháp AREA vào trả lời câu hỏi ở một số chủ đề trong IELTS Speaking Part 3

Topic 1: The Internet and Social Media

Question 1:  Which websites are popular among your generation? 

As far as I’m concerned, social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter are among the most mainstream websites in the 21st century (Answer). This is due to the fact that, with the demand to stay up-to-date and connected with people from all around the world constantly, these media platforms can serve almost every user’s purposes (Reason). Take Facebook as an example; it provides Internet users in this day and age an online-based community to exchange information as well as reach out to other users in the world (Example). 

Question 2: What will be the next big development online?

From my point of view, I think distance learning and online learning will play a major part in education reform (Answer). As a matter of fact, it is predicted to be one of the most optimal solutions not only for remote students but also for those seeking for high-quality education with an affordable price (Reason). For instance, online platforms like Google Meet or Zoom have been updated spontaneously to be more adapted  for use schools and institutions since the outbreak of COVID pandemic. Changes during this time are the stepping stone for adjustment and advancement in the online study system in the future (Example). 

Question 3: How has the Internet changed social behavior? 

In my opinion, it has largely influenced the way society runs and human beings exchange information (Answer).  The establishment of the internet has led to one of the most significant effect in the act of acquiring knowledge and that is one can now seek for resources from anywhere in the world; another one would be the government can now implement regulations or societal changes online and citizens can have access to those information sitting at home. (Reasons). One notable example is that during the COVID pandemic, the U.S has decided to run online voting systems for their upcoming presidential election, which would have been impossible in the past without the advent of the Internet. (Example).

Question 4: Is using the internet a social or solitary activity? 

From my perspective, it depends on the Internet users’ purposes (Answer). Firstly, if people just use the internet to complete their individual work or collect information for themselves, it’s a solitary activity (Reason 1). For example, a student is given an online writing assignment and he or she has to do research on his or her own; this entirely means his or her using Internet is solitary (Example 1). Secondly, in contrast, since the beginning of internet explosion, people are given tools to stay connected and work simultaneously altogether through many social platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp or Skype (Reason – Example 2). 

Question 5: What would the world be like without the Internet?

I’m sure that there will be huge changes in the way people communicate and exchange information without the Internet (Answer). This is because people having been using the Internet for multiple purposes such as searching for information, sharing news, networking and so on (Reason). For instance, if the Internet suddenly disappears, people would have to relearn how to do thing in a low-tech way and that would definitely take much more time to finish things (Example). 

Question 6: How can social media negatively impact young children?

We all know that social media has become an integral part of many young children’s lives, and therefore, gaining access to violent content on the Internet is much easier nowadays, which  could affect our young users negatively (Answer). To be clearer, offensive, explicit and violent contents could impact their minds in a negative way, giving them a bad perspective of how relationships and society could turn out to be, which eventually both directly and indirectly forms their behaviors later in life (Reason). However, it would be unfair to completely blame the Internet for this kind of negativity, since families should be those constantly keeping eyes on their children and setting age restriction in the first place (Alternatives).

Question 7: Should companies check job applicants’ online profiles? 

I think it is a brilliant idea for employers to check the job applicants’ online profiles in order to have a better understanding of the applicant’s personality (Answer). 

This is simply because checking their online profiles or social accounts could give employers useful insights about their new recruits (Reason). In this modern era, people tend to upload changes or interesting events happening in their lives on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on. Looking at the content they put on those channels, recruiters can know more about the candidate’s prior experience or their personality, which would tell if the candidates could fit the company’s culture or not! (Example). 

On the other hand, employers should not only judge their potential candidates based only on their online profiles, since it is certain that there are other important factors that need to be evaluated carefully to decide whether they are the suitable person for the job vacancy. (Alternatives).

Topic 2: Love, Dating and Marriage

Question 1: If you are 35 years old and unmarried, would you still wait for your true love? Why? 

Well, I have never really thought of it before, but I would say yes (Answer). To me, people should not make hasty decisions about love, especially about marriage. This is due to the fact that true love does not come round often so people should not rush love but instead, be ready when it comes (Reason). Alternatively, at the age of 35, if remaining single, one should focus on their career and future savings, so when true love arrives, they will be mentally and financially stable and ready (Alternatives). 

Question 2: What do you think is the best age to get married? 

In my opinion, the most suitable age for marriage is around 25 (Answer).

Well, there are 2 reasons why that is such an ideal age for one to settle down. Firstly, at that age, people are at their best state; their bodies are well-prepared to adjust to any physical changes (Reason 1). For example, women stand their best chance of recovering from giving birth as their bodies have fully developed at that age (Example 1). The second reason is people will also be mature enough, which means they are responsible and mentally ready for any milestone (Reason 2). At that age, they should be able to make sound decisions and commit to them, such as living under the same roof with their partner or becoming parents. (Example 2).

Question 3: Is it better to be single or to be married? 

It depends (Answer).There are many reasons why people enjoy their free and single life and those reasons can be surprisingly simple (Reason 1). For instance, they get to do whatever they want and experience things that couples are not able to do like going on a blind date! (Example 1). 

On the other hand, some are desperate to find their perfect match and settle down (Reason 2). To be more specific, getting married means having a companion through ups and downs, regardless of any hardship in life. (Example 2). All in all, being single or getting married mostly depends on how they plan their life.

Question 4: What makes a happy marriage? 

In my opinion, mutual understanding and respect lay a solid foundation for a successful and happy marriage (Answer), because the better communication a couple has, the stronger their marriage is (Reason). What I mean is that as husband and wife, both don’t have to completely agree with each other’s opinions on daily issues, but they should be willing to accept the differences and learn to reconcile so they can reach decisions that are mutually agreed (Example).

Question 5: Do you think marriage is still as important as ever?

Definitely , I believe that marriage has always played a crucial part in every society (Answer). This is simple because of the fact that a healthy marriage will lay a solid foundation for a strong society (Reason). For example, happy families are likely to raise happy children, and those children are the future of any society (Example). 

On the other hand/ However, underestimating the importance of marriage will lead to immeasurable consequences such as the significant increase in the rate of young women’s abortion and divorces (Alternatives).

Question 6: Do you think people should be allowed to get divorced?

To me, divorces should be not only legal but also widely accepted (Answer). Being abused physically and even mentally is the reason why some people choose divorces, their only escape from an unhealthy marriage. Furthermore, if being under certain circumstances such as physical abuse, domestic violence and so on, people should be allowed to initiate divorce from one side (Reasons). 

On the other hand/ However, husbands and wife should take this kind of decision into careful consideration since divorces should only be considered as the last option (Alternatives).

Question 7: What changes do you foresee in the future about marriage?

From my point of view, in the near future, the marriage rate in Vietnam will be the same but people will get married much later (Answer). As a matter of fact,  young people have proven to be more and more open about their emotions and thoughts, resulting in more successful marriages.

However, their goal in life may have changed from having a happy marriage to having a wealthy life, which means the average age for one to get married would be around 30 (Reason). One notable example is that plenty youngsters give priority to working and earning a living their, not love nowadays (Example).
