Mệnh đề quan hệ (relative clauses) còn được gọi là mệnh đề tính ngữ (adjectives clauses), là mệnh đề phụ được dung để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đứng trước. Mệnh đề quan hệ đứng ngay sau danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa và được bắt đầu bằng các đại từ quan hệ (relative pronouns) như who, whom, which, whose, that hoặc các trạng từ quan hệ (relative adverbs) when, where, why.

Các phần bài tập mệnh đề quan hệ này sẽ mất khá nhiều thời gian, vậy nên bạn hãy dành hẳn ra khoảng 1 thời gian khoảng 1 tiếng học gồm ôn lại kiến thức về mệnh đề quan hệ, sau đó làm bài tập mệnh đề quan hệ nhé. Đặc biệt, với bạn nào làm sai nhiều, thì cần đặc biệt lưu ý ôn lại kiến thức lý thuyết về mệnh đề quan hệ nha.

I. Review tổng quan về mệnh đề quan hệ

1. Mệnh đề quan hệ là gì?

Mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề đứng sau một danh từ và bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đó.

Ví dụ:

• The man who is wearing the black hat is my friend.

⇒ Trong câu trên, “who is wearing the black hat” được gọi là một mệnh đề, nó đứng sau “The man” và bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đứng trước nó.

2. Các loại mệnh đề quan hệ

– Mệnh đề xác định (Defining clause)

• Là mệnh đề được dùng để xác định danh từ đứng trước nó, bắt buộc phải có mệnh đề quan hệ trong câu để bổ sung nghĩa cho danh từ; không có nó câu sẽ không đủ nghĩa.
• Tất cả các đại từ quan hệ được sử dụng trong mệnh đề xác định.
• Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định không có dấu phẩy và được sử dụng khi danh từ là danh từ không xác định.

Ví dụ:

• The boy who is wearing a blue T shirt is my little brother.
  (Cậu bé mặc áo phông màu xanh là em trai tôi.)

⇒ Nếu không sử dụng mệnh đề “who is wearing a blue T shirt” thì người nghe sẽ rất khó để xác định cậu bé nào là em trai của bạn. Do đó, mệnh đề “who is wearing a blue T shirt” là quan trọng và bắt buộc phải có trong câu.

– Mệnh đề không xác định (Non-defining clauses)

• Là mệnh đề cung cấp thêm thông tin về người hoặc vật, không bắt buộc, không có nó thì câu văn vẫn đúng ngữ pháp và nghĩa không thay đổi.
• Mệnh đề không xác định có dấu phẩy và Mệnh đề này không được dùng “That”.

Ví dụ:

• Taylor Swift, who is famous all round the world, is a singer.
  (Taylor Swift, người nổi tiếng khắp thế giới, là một ca sĩ)

⇒ Nếu không có mệnh đề “who is famous all round the world” thì người nghe vẫn biết Taylor Swift là ca sĩ. Do đó, mệnh đề “who is famous all round the world” không bất buộc phải có trong câu.

3. Đại từ quan hệ và trạng từ quan hệ

– Đại từ có thể đóng vai trò là chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ. Để tạo nên câu mệnh đề quan hệ thì không thể thiếu những đại từ quan hệ và trạng từ quan hệ. Dưới đây là các đại từ được dùng trong câu.

– Chúng ta có các đại từ quan hệ sau:

• Who: Thay thế cho người, dùng như chủ ngữ, tân ngữ
  » … N (person) + WHO + V + O
• Whom: Thay thế cho người, dùng như tân ngữ
  » … N (person) + WHOM + S + V
• Which: Thay thế cho đồ vật, sự việc, dùng như chủ ngữ, tân ngữ
  » … N (thing) + WHICH + V + O
  » … N (thing) + WHICH + S + V
• Whose: Thay thế cho tính từ sở hữu của cả người và vật, dùng như đại từ sở hữu
  » … N (person, thing) + WHOSE + N + V …
• That: Thay thế cho cả người và vật, dùng như chủ ngữ, tân ngữ.
  » Không dùng trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định.
  » Không dùng sau giới từ

– Trạng từ quan hệ có thể được sử dụng thay cho một đại từ quan hệ và giới từ. Cách làm này sẽ làm cho câu dễ hiểu hơn.

– Chúng ta có các trạng từ quan hệ sau:

• When = on / at / in which
  » Trạng từ quan hệ chỉ thời gian, đứng sau danh từ chỉ thời gian
  » … N (time) + WHEN + S + V
• Where  = at/ in/ from/ on which
  » Trạng từ quan hệ chỉ nơi chốn, đứng sau danh từ chỉ nơi chốn
  » … N (place) + WHERE + S + V
• Why = for which
  » Trạng từ quan hệ chỉ lý do, thường đứng sau danh từ “the reason”
  » … the reason + WHY + S + V
