Một số collocation chủ đề “Being famous” trong IELTS Speaking

I. Giới thiệu chung về collocation trong IELTS Speaking

Collocation là một từ, cụm từ thường được sử dụng với một từ hay cụm từ khác để biểu thị một ý nghĩa cụ thể. Theo từ điển Cambridge, các cụm từ này được kết hợp một cách tự nhiên mà không dựa vào ý nghĩa riêng lẻ của các từ cấu tạo nên chúng. Việc sử dụng collocation trong giao tiếp nói riêng và IELTS Speaking nói chung giúp cho ngôn ngữ nói trở nên tự nhiên hơn.

Ngoài ra, trong Band Descriptors để chấm điểm kỹ năng IELTS Speaking, “collocation” bắt đầu xuất hiện ở band 7 của tiêu chí Lexical Resource, cụ thể: “uses some less common and idiomatic vocabulary and shows some awareness of style and collocation” (thí sinh có khả năng sử dụng những từ vựng ít phổ biến và từ vựng mang tính thành ngữ, thể hiện nhận thức về phong cách ngôn ngữ và các cụm từ cố định).

II. Áp dụng collocation trong đề thi Speaking chủ đề Being Famous

Part 1

• Who is your favorite celebrity in your country?
• Do you have any favorite foreign celebrities?
• Do you want to be a celebrity? Why/ Why not?

Part 2

Describe a famous singer you are interested in

You should say:

• Who he/she is;
• How you knew about him/her;
• What he/she was like before he/she became famous;

And explain why you are interested in him/her

Part 3

• What kinds of famous people are there in your country?
• What are the differences between famous people today and those in the past?
• Do you think famous people are necessarily good in their fields？
• Do you think the media are putting too much attention on famous people?

III. Một số collocation thuộc chủ đề Being Famous trong IELTS Speaking

1. New-found fame (n)

– Định nghĩa: Một sự nổi tiếng gần đây

– Ví dụ: The recent film has brought the actress new-found fame.
             (Bộ phim mới đã mang lại cho nữ diễn viên một sự nổi tiếng gần đây.)

– Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking: 

• Q: Do you have any favorite foreign celebrities?
  A: Well, yes. Kelly Mary Tran is my favorite actress. You may not know her, but recently, the success of Raya and The Last Dragon has brought her new-found fame. 

2. Household name (n)

– Định nghĩa: một cái tên mà mọi người đều biết

– Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking:  

• Q: Do you want to be a celebrity? Why/Why not? 
• A: Yes, I’ve always wanted to become a successful actor, who is a household name in my country. I mean, I love acting and have taken part in several plays at school. 

3. Make it big (v)

– Định nghĩa: Trở nên nổi tiếng và thành công 

– Ví dụ: David had made it big in the business world.
             (David đã trở nên nổi tiếng và thành công trong giới kinh doanh.)

• Q: Who is your favorite celebrity in your country?
• A: Well, I’ve been a big fan of Son Tung MTP, a famous singer in Vietnam. By the time he was twenty-two, he had made it big in the music business. 

4. Shoot to stardom (v)

– Định nghĩa: Trở nên nổi tiếng và thành công một cách bất ngờ

– Ví dụ: He shot to stardom after the release of his first album. 
             (Anh ấy trở nên nổi tiếng một cách bất ngờ sau khi phát hành album đầu tay.)

– Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking: 

• Q: What kinds of famous people are there in your country?
• A: Actually, I think that people can be famous for many reasons. The most important thing is their talent. For example, a successful singer must have a beautiful and touching voice. But sometimes, some people can shoot to stardom thanks to their attractive physical appearance. 

5. Steal the limelight (n)

– Định nghĩa: Dành lấy sự chú ý từ một ai đó/ cái gì. 

– Ví dụ: The new car stole the limelight at the motor show because of its gorgeous look.
             (Chiếc xe mới này đã thu hút mọi sự chú ý trong buổi trưng bày bởi kiểu dáng lộng lẫy của nó.)

6. Hit the headlines (v)

– Định nghĩa: Xuất hiện thường xuyên trên các phương tiện báo đài

– Ví dụ: She hit the deadlines after her scandal at the film studio.
             (Cô ta xuất hiện rất nhiều trên các mặt báo sau vụ ẩu đả tại phim trường.)

– Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking: 

• Q: Do you think social media are putting too much attention on famous people?
• A: Yes, I do believe so. Nowadays, famous people hit the headlines more frequently than ever before. Every day I surf Facebook and all I can see are photos or posts about famous singers, actors and the like. And they post all kinds of information, even some nonsense quotes of famous people just to attract the public attention. Honestly, I feel really annoyed with that. 

7. Be in the public eye (a)

– Định nghĩa: Xuất hiện trên các bảng tin, phương tiện truyền thông báo đài.

– Ví dụ: The Beckham family is always in the public eye. 
             (Gia đình Beckham luôn luôn xuất hiện trên các phương tiện truyền thông.)

– Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking:

• Q: Do you think that famous people are generally happier than ordinary people?
• A: Well, at some point, I mean, famous people can be happy as they enjoy their wealth. However, when they are always in the public eye for no reason, they may feel disturbed and uncomfortable. Besides, famous people can also be annoyed by paparazzi who are always sneaking around and taking photos. You know, it’s really hard to be in the center of attention sometimes. 

8. Make a name for yourself (v)

– Định nghĩa: Trở nên nổi tiếng và được mọi người tôn trọng 

– Ví dụ: Tran Thanh made a name for himself as a talented MC.
             (Trấn Thành đã trở nên nổi tiếng với vai trò là một người dẫn chương trình tài năng.)

Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking: 

• Q: What do you think about the impact of celebrities’ style on the youth nowadays? 
• A: In my opinion, celebrities’ style can have a significant impact on young people. I mean, young people nowadays tend to imitate their idols’ fashion style and try to dress like them at all cost. Some celebrities such as singers and actors really know how to make a name for themselves in the fashion industry too. You know, they take advantage of their fame and dress in any kind of clothes they like, and the next minute, they become trendsetters and have millions of followers. 

9. Be a legend in your own lifetime (a)

– Định nghĩa: Một huyền thoại lúc bấy giờ 

– Ví dụ: Michael Jackson was a legend in his own lifetime.
             (Michael Jackson là một huyền thoại vào thời của ông ấy.)

Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking: 

• Q: What are the differences between famous people today and those in the past?
• A: Personally, I think the main difference lies in the way they become famous. I mean, in the past, people needed to have innate talents to rise to stardom. For example, the Vietnamese composer Trinh Cong Son, a legend in his own lifetime, was well-known for his outstanding talent in writing romantic music.
  In contrast, if you want to be famous nowadays, you don’t need to have those special talents, I mean, all you need is to have good-looking appearance or to post something viral on Youtube. You know, Now is the time of Internet celebrities. 

10. Put something/ somebody on the map (v)

– Định nghĩa: Làm cho cái gì/ ai đó trở nên nổi tiếng 

– Ví dụ: His talent in the film industry has put him on the map.
             (Tài năng của anh ta đã giúp anh ta trở nên nổi tiếng.)

– Câu hỏi trong IELTS Speaking:

• Q: Do you think famous people are necessarily good in their fields？
• A: I don’t think so. Their talents and abilities in the fields are not the only thing that put them on the map. Actually, they can be well-known for some scandals, trendy quotes or their appearance. For example, some models who want to be singers nowadays do not need to have a good voice. In fact, they focus more on producing some music videos with viral lyrics and catchy melody.
